SCULPTURES

AIR MONEY

Plastic bags, permanent marker, 2012

“Money is a medium of exchange, a unit of account and a store of value. Any kind of good can serve as money, if it is accepted as such by custom, social agreement or positive record. “(Austrian National Bank).

Some societies made money out of valuable materials like precious metals or rare shells. Today’s money’s face value has nothing in common with its real value (the price for the paper it’s printed on for instance).

Moreover, in times of war or crisis, “emergency currency” could be issued that could be made of virtually any material available: silk, wood, aluminium foil or even pressed coal dust.

With this in mind I created money out of plastic bags. I named it “Air Money” which has only value as a work of art.

SOFTSHELLS

Semi-transparent mirror foil | 2008

Is the feeling of safety deceptive? Snail shells offer only limited protection to their inhabitants.
The shapes of these sculptural works are based on the mathematical structure of snail shells.
One can hide behind these „soft shells“ and still perceive a glimmer of the surroundings.
How exposed and how covered are we in today’s electronic age?

BREATH

Installation: PE foil, PVC tubes, air pump, life-sized | 2007

Everyday objects made of transparent plastic foil connected by hoses.
When the air pump is activated, the limp plastic objects seem to breathe: they stretch and grow, taking on the shape of a table, armchair, radiator, houseplant, picture frame and cushion. As soon as the pumping stops, you hear the air escape and see the objects go limp.
Inanimate things that are solid in our normal perception suddenly seem to have an animated quality and breathe visibly and audibly.
