FOREIGNER

Canvas, acrylic mirror, rope, rivets, 60×60 cm | 2015

With a few exceptions, most people feel at home in exactly one country. In the rest of the world, we are strangers or foreigners.

This work deals with the angle from which we perceive and judge other people, with our own cultural values and how we deal with the values of others.

The look of the tarpaulin with the rivets and ropes is meant to remind us of lorries, often means of transport for illegal border crossing from one country to another. When we open this tarpaulin, we only catch sight of ourselves in the mirror: the stranger in the other parts of the world.
